Mystery Shopping Scams

Mystery shopping, like any industry, unfortunately, has its share of scams. Here are some of the most common ones to watch out for:

Upfront Payment Scams: In this scheme, scammers pose as legitimate mystery shopping companies and promise lucrative assignments in exchange for an upfront fee. Legitimate mystery shopping companies do not require payment from shoppers to access assignments.

Check-Cashing Scams: In this scam, shoppers receive a check supposedly for their mystery shopping assignment. They are instructed to deposit the check, keep a portion as payment, and wire the rest back to the company or another party. However, the check is fraudulent, and the shopper ends up losing their own money.

Overpayment Scams: Similar to check-cashing scams, shoppers are sent a check for more than the agreed-upon amount and instructed to deposit it, keep their payment, and wire the excess back. Again, the check is fraudulent, and the shopper loses money.

Phishing Scams: Scammers may send emails or messages posing as legitimate mystery shopping companies, asking for personal information or payment details. These phishing attempts can lead to identity theft or financial loss.

To avoid falling victim to these scams, it's essential to research any company before accepting assignments or providing personal information. Legitimate mystery shopping companies will not ask for payment upfront, will not send overpayment checks, and will not require payment to access assignments. If something seems too good to be true or raises red flags, trust your instincts and proceed with caution.
